One thing that first-time visitors to Hawai’i are not likely to expect is to be awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of a rooster crowing. Yet that is just one of the surprises in store for those going to the island of Kaua’i. In fact, they will find chickens everywhere: parading through a shopping center, appearing alongside the roadways, even at the beach. And the roosters don’t just crow at dawn: It’s a constant background to the other sounds of the Garden Island: wind in the palms, ocean waves, and calls of “Aloha!”
