Threat To Housing

HB 1115 would allow landlords to evict tenants at the end of the lease term, as long as they provide at least 30 days’ notice. (Getty Images)

House Bill 1115, which has passed the New Hampshire House of Representatives, 194-180, would allow landlords to evict tenants with a 30-day notice at the end of their lease, without having to cite any specific reason. Currently, New Hampshire’s anti-discrimination statute protects a person from being evicted on the basis of age, sex, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, familial status, national origin, or physical or mental disability. Landlords also cannot evict a tenant in retaliation for reporting health and safety violations.

In August 2022, a lower-court judge granted James Covington’s request to change his first name to Jamauri. He told the court that he had “worked hard in my quest to correct my wrong doings” and was seeking a “fresh start” after having been sentenced to prison for 30 years to life for murdering his lover, Debra Dunce. The state filed a request to overturn the decision, arguing that he had not provided a compelling or necessary reason for the name change.

Riding The Moose

Vermont is … different.

It’s not really all that different from the New Hampshire I grew up in, but that New Hampshire is mostly long gone, papered over by the lure of development and tourism. No longer does one find many vast expanses of farmland, homes built by hand with full-size logs lying alongside the driveway, waiting to be cut and split into firewood, or communities where the nearest neighbor is half a mile away.
