In August 2022, a lower-court judge granted James Covington’s request to change his first name to Jamauri. He told the court that he had “worked hard in my quest to correct my wrong doings” and was seeking a “fresh start” after having been sentenced to prison for 30 years to life for murdering his lover, Debra Dunce. The state filed a request to overturn the decision, arguing that he had not provided a compelling or necessary reason for the name change.

What Makes It Interesting
Sometimes, the career one seeks leads to an entirely different vocation, and that certainly was the case for Myrl Phelps of Danbury, a member of the League of NH Craftsmen who produces one-of-a-kind wooden pieces ranging from cutting boards to intricate cabinetry.

Riding The Moose
Vermont is … different.
It’s not really all that different from the New Hampshire I grew up in, but that New Hampshire is mostly long gone, papered over by the lure of development and tourism. No longer does one find many vast expanses of farmland, homes built by hand with full-size logs lying alongside the driveway, waiting to be cut and split into firewood, or communities where the nearest neighbor is half a mile away.
It Just Wasn’t His Day
Joseph P. Vaillancourt III of Rumney is facing charges of reckless conduct, theft by unauthorized taking, aggravated driving under the influence, attempting to elude police, DUI impairment, disobeying a police officer, driving after suspension, criminal mischief, and resisting arrest, all after crashing his friend’s vehicle, stealing a truck, crashing again, and running from State Troopers. He finally was taken into custody after a State Police K-9 tracked him back to his home.
Put Up Or Shut Up
Administrative Services Commissioner Charlie Arlinghaus, who has been overseeing the sale of the former Laconia State School property, has given Legacy at Laconia a final deadline of April 15 to complete the $21.5 million purchase of the 220-acre site. The closing date for the sale has been extended four times.
The Need Is There
BRISTOL — Residents attending a public hearing concerning a proposed $200,000 expenditure to place a modular classroom at Danbury Elementary School largely supported the idea, but posed questions for the Newfound Area School Board to consider before finalizing the deal.
Tragedy Strikes
The US Coast Guard has suspended its search-and-rescue efforts for the six workers still missing after a cargo ship that had lost power rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore MD, causing it to collapse. A mayday signal from the ship allowed officials to shut down most of the traffic on the four-lane bridge before the 95,000-gross-ton vessel plowed into a bridge piling, causing multiple sections of the span to bow and snap in a harrowing scene captured on video. Eight construction workers who were repairing potholes fell into the 48-degree waters of the Patapsco River. Divers were able to rescue two of the workers.
One Killed, Four Injured In Crash
Hannah Chaignot, 18, of Meredith, died, and the driver, Nicholas Bray, 19, of Bristol, along with three others, were rushed to Concord and Laconia hospitals after a two-vehicle collision in the area of 147 Daniel Webster Highway in Meredith. Three of the crash victims were then taken by helicopter to trauma centers in Boston.

Spring, Then Winter
I failed to note spring’s arrival on March 19, but our crocuses did not forget, pushing up through the ground to greet the sun. That’s all right: They soon were covered in snow, so talking about spring’s arrival now does not seem so tardy.
